City organizes taskforce for Sunnyside flash flooding

The City of Calgary has organized a temporary taskforce to help residents impacted by flash flooding in Sunnyside Friday night.

Heavy rain combined with saturated soil in low-lying areas near the Bow River caused water to pool around the Sunnyside neighbourhood. Traffic in many areas of the city came to a crawl as huge puddles of water pooled on roads and underpasses.

There were also reports of water seeping into some basements in Sunnyside.

Representatives from ATCO, Enmax, Water Services and the Calgary Fire Department will be going door-to-door to assess the impact of the flash flooding.

Friday's rainfall also caused problems with a section of Canadian Pacific railroad tracks near Shouldice Park.

CP Rail says crews and slope engineers are on the scene assessing the damage of a small washout, and that other inspection crews were already in the area when the problem was first discovered.

There were no injuries,or any safety or environmental concerns as a result of the washout.

No traffic disruptions have been reported.
