Toddler injured at Calgary day home dies

A toddler injured at a private day home in southeast Calgary this week has died.

Police said the 21-month-old girl was taken off life supportFriday night.

The girl was found unconscious and not breathing at a day home in McKenzie Towne Wednesday afternoon.

Police were originally told the younggirl had fallen down stairs. She was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Neighbours of the day home operator said she had one child of her own and was caring forthree others.

Police say the homicide unitis now investigating and an autopsy is set for early next week. They are not releasing the name of the girl.

Duty Insp. Darren Leggatt says investigations like this are difficult, even for seasoned officers.

"These events are certainly tragic, as with most of you, most of us have young children and events of this nature typically impact us as well," he said.
