Lilydale fined by province for ammonia leak

The Alberta government has laid charges against Lilydale Inc. over a chemical leak at its southeast Calgary poultry plant two years ago.

The Alberta government has laid charges against Lilydale Inc. over a chemical leak at its southeast Calgary poultry plant two years ago.

The charges, laid under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, relate to the release of ammonia at Lilydale's Ramsay plant in September 2009.

The province said the Edmonton-based company failed "to make a timely report of the release to Alberta Environment".

The companys first court appearance is set for Oct. 21 in Calgary provincial court.

In January 2010 the province opted not to fine Lilydale after two blood spills outside the inner-city chicken plant. Residents living near the facility were upset with that decision.
