Slippery roads create dangerous driving conditions in and around Calgary

Police say there were 136 crashes in Calgary between 6:00 p.m. Wednesday night and noon on Thursday and nearly two dozen collisions with injuries.

Drivers are warned of slippery winter conditions as they continue to respond to numerous crashes in and around the city.

"There's no rush,"said DutyInsp. John McCarthy, adding that the small amount of time saved by speeding is not worth the risk.

"If you end up in a catastrophic crash or someone gets hurt or your vehicle's damaged, then there's no win there," he said.

Highways outside the city are dangerous too; two people are in serious condition after anaccident near Cochrane Thursday morning.

A van travelling eastbound on Highway 1 near the intersection with Highway 22lost control, crossed themedian and hit a car in the oncoming lane, according to EMS.

Firefighters extricated both the driver and passenger of the car; a woman in her 20s and a male in his late teens were taken to Foothills Hospital.

STARS air ambulance airlifted a 68year-old man from a crash north of Airdrie at Highway 567 and Range Road 284 just afternoon.

Sand trucks are on the highways in an effort to combat the icy conditions, according toRCMP.

RCMP and city police are asking people to slow down, particularly when first responders are attending a collision.
