3 men charged in CrossIron Mills shooting that forced mall visitors to shelter in place

Three men have been charged in connection with a shooting at CrossIron Mills mall in September that forced shoppers and staff to shelter in place as police searched for a gunman.

Three men have been charged in connection with a shootingat CrossIron Mills mall in Balzac that forced shoppers and staff to shelter in place as police searched for a gunman.

On Sept. 16, police received reports of a shooting at the mall shortly after 7 p.m.

The Calgary Police Service and Airdrie RCMP, including a tactical team, CPS helicopter and a canine unit,responded.

It was determined that a shooting had occurred in the parking lot of the mall near the food court entrance and one man was injured.

Police cordoned off the mall and asked shoppers and workers inside to shelter in place as officers searched for a gunman.

The wounded man wastaken to a Calgary hospital with seriousinjuries that were not life-threatening. There were no other injuries.

The Southern Alberta DistrictCrime Reduction Unitidentified three men believed to be involved in the incident, RCMP said.

On Nov. 10, the three suspects, all from Calgary, were arrested.

Dakota Brandon Bolton, 25, is charged with:

  • Attempted murder.
  • Conspiracy to commit murder.
  • Disguise with intent.
  • Using a firearm while committing an offence.
  • Using a firearm without having a licence.
  • Failing to comply with a recognizance.

Carl James Schuyler, 35, is charged with:

  • Attempted murder.
  • Conspiracy to commit murder.
  • Possession of stolen property valued at over $5,000.
  • Failing to comply with a recognizance.

Jari Erkki Manner, 37, is charged with:

  • Attempted murder.
  • Conspiracy to commit murder.
  • Two counts of failing to comply with a recognizance.

All three men remain in custody.

"While the RCMP cannot provide information about the nature of the motive behind the shooting, investigation indicates that this was a targeted incident," RCMP said in a release.

Bolton and Schuyler are set to appear in provincial court in Airdrie via closed-circuit television on Thursday.

Manner is to appear in provincial court in Airdrietoday.
