School board eyes modernizing messages to parents

Calgary's public school board is exploring ways of modernizing how it communicates with parents.

New system could use Facebook and other social media

Calgary's public school board is exploring ways of modernizing how it communicates with parents.

Currently the Calgary Board of Education uses an automated telephone systemas well as old-fashioned written noticesto get messages to parents.

But all too often, those written notes sent home with students disappear deep into their backpacks, said Brant Parker, the CBEs director of learning technology.

The upgraded system being explored by the board could see parents getting emergency alerts and information about school events via Facebook or text, he said.

"At one point in time there was one avenue to formally communicate with parents, we're wanting to ensure that we expand what it is that's available to us and harness the potential that exists," Parker said.

The board has put out a request for a proposal and plans to make a decision on the new system in the next few months. It's expected to cost roughly $150,000.
