Calgary police have identified the victim of Wednesday's early morning shooting in the city's northeast as Robert Anthony Jones, 19, of Calgary.

The caseis Calgarys 24th homicide of 2008.

Police said they believed Jones wasdeliberately targetted. They are working to identify suspects and a motive.

Jones was killed on a quiet street in a middle-class neighbourhood. Neighbours saw his body lying on the lawn of a home in the 8400 block of Saddleridge Drive, where he was living with roommates.

Friends of the young man told CBC News onThursday that he was not a member of a gang, but he did have enemies.

Jessica, a former girlfriend, said the people she goes to parties with are so violent that she's afraid todivulge her last name to the media. The violence has nothing to do with drugs, she said.

"It could be about girls, cars, money, their house, respect. It could be about anything. Guys dont care. They want to look tough; they want to look cool. They want to show whos boss," Jessica said.

"It just ends in really bad situations where they hurt their families and friends. Its unbelievable."

Stephanie, 20, another friend of Jones, agreed that her friends aren't in gangs, but they are part of a group of guys who have enemies.

Both young women said its common for their friends to get into fights, but nowguns are being used more often.

"There's lots of people that if they have a problem with you, then they'll have their backup their family or their friends, who have other backup. It just gets big and then you're screwed," Stephanie said.

Jessica said no one will call the police about violent incidents theyve witnessed.

"No one will go to the police. They won't. They're not going to. I've never had a friend who wants to call," she said.

On Thursday, Calgary police said they're worried that the escalating gun violence in the city will end upin an innocent bystander being killed.

On Monday, Efrem Mehari Kuflom, 30, of Calgary was driving his car in an alley near a Tim Hortons on 12th Avenue at 11th Street S.W. when a man on foot pulled out a gun and shot him. Police have no suspects in the case, either.
