Look out, drivers: Widespread road closures on the way this weekend

Brace yourself, Calgary drivers.

Summer is here and with it comes road closures due to construction, upgrades and special events that are guaranteed to contribute to traffic snarls throughout the city.

There's road construction underway all over the city and this weekend a big concrete pour at the Crowchild Trail overpass bridge will impact traffic, said Sean Somerswith the city's transportation department.

Monday morning's commute is also going to be a mess, he said.

"It's going to be busy. There is no two ways about it."

But this weekend is definitely shaping up to be a doozyfor drivers. Here's what you need to know:

Crowchild Trail/Memorial Drive

• Double right-hand lane closures in both directions between Bow Trail and Memorial Drive from Friday at 9 p.m. to Saturday at 9 a.m.
• Single right-hand lane closure on both directions between Bow Trail and Memorial Drive from Saturday at 9 a.m. to Tuesday at 5 a.m.
• The ramp connecting southbound Crowchild Trail to eastbound Memorial Drive, closed Friday at 9 p.m. to Saturday at 5 a.m.
• The ramp connecting eastbound Memorial Drive (Parkdale Boulevard) to southbound Crowchild Trail, closed Friday at 9 p.m. to Tuesday at 5 a.m.
• The ramp connecting northbound Crowchild Trail to eastbound Memorial Drive, close Friday at 9 p.m. to Tuesday at 5 a.m.

The city is advising drivers to avoid the area and plan alternative commutes for Monday morning and evening as some closures will remain in place until Tuesday at 5 a.m.

Southwest Closures

• Glenmore Trail S.W. & Crowchild Trail S.W. flyover southbound Crowchild Trail S.W. to eastbound Glenmore Trail closed overnight Friday and Saturday from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
• Left-hand lane on 90th Avenue S.W. closed at 14th Street S.W. from June 22 to July 4.
• Southbound 14th Street S.W. lane reductions between 90 Avenue and Southland Drive S.W. on Friday, June 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• 9th Avenue S.W. over top of 14th Street SWreduced to a single lane beginning on Friday, June 22 at 6 p.m. until Sunday, June 24 at 9 p.m.

Southeast Closures

• Fifth Avenue S.E. -closed between 3 Street and 4 Street S.E. from 7 a.m.Monday, June 25 until 7 p.m. Monday, August 24.
• 11th Street S.E. - closed between 34 Avenue and 42 Avenue S.E. on Saturday, June 23 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• 52nd Street S.E. & 17th Avenue S.E. - closed between 16 Avenue and 17 Avenue S.E. from 7 p.m. Friday until Tuesday at 5 a.m., 17 Avenue S.E. will be reduced to one lane in each direction at 52 Street. Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes.

Northwest Closures

• 37th Street N.W. closed between 32nd Avenue N.W. and 40th Avenue N.W. on Saturday, June 23 from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
• Bowness Road N.W.closed between 47th Street and 48th Street N.W. from Friday, June 22 at 7 p.m. until Monday, June 25 at 5 a.m.
• 14th Street N.W. and Memorial Drive N.W.reduced lanes from Friday, June 22 at 9 p.m. until Monday, June 25 at 5 a.m.

Northeast Closures

• Barlow Trail N.E. - Northbound section will be closed at 100 Avenue N.E. on Saturday, June 23 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Special Event Road Closures

Calgary Track Takeover

• Macleod Trail S.E. will be closed between NinthAvenue S.E. and SeventhAvenue S.E.
• EighthAvenue S.E. will be closed between Macleod Trail S.E. and FirstStreet S.E.

Closed from 7 p.m. on Friday, June 22 to 11:59 p.m. on Saturday June 23.

Color Me Rad

• 10th Street N.W. will be closed between FifthAvenue N.W. and 16th Avenue N.W.
• 13th Avenue N.W. will be closed between Crescent Road N.W. and 10th Street N.W.

Closed Saturday June 23 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sled Island Block Party

• 10th Street S.E. between NinthAvenue S.E. and 10th Avenue S.E.
• 10th Avenue S.E. between 10th Street S.E. and 11th Street S.E.

Closed Saturday June 23 from noon to midnight.

Wild Rose Women's Triathlon

• Right lane westbound on 24th Avenue N.W. between Campus Gate N.W. and Collegiate Road N.W.
• Right lane eastbound on 32nd Avenue N.W. between Collegiate Boulevard N.W. and Campus Gate N.W.
