Real Ski Report: Storm rolls through Revelstoke and Kicking Horse

Each week, CBC Calgary's Paul Karchut speaks with dozens of dedicated skiers and boarders across eastern B.C. and southern Alberta to get the real scoop on conditions at resorts, on cross-country trails and in the backcountry.

Powder hounds have been waiting eagerly for some freshies and the snow gods delivered. There will besome fantastic riding this weekend at several Rocky Mountain resorts in B.C.

A system rolling through the west coast landed inRevelstokeThursdayand the hill got a whopping 28cm in the last 24 hours. The storm also hitKickingHorseleavingbehind14 cm.

Ferniehas alsohad a very good week,accumulatingover60 cm in the last seven days.

"I'm skiing knee-deep powder with no tracks anywhere to be seen and it's still snowing," said ski reporter, Ryland Nelson, from Fernie Thursday.

It's set to warm up this weekend, which could cause the lower half of the mountain to get a bit slushy.

We've been getting great reports a little further east at Castle Mountain, where50 cms ofnew snow has fallenin the lastseven days.

Our reporters in Panormaand the Bow Valley say dribs and drabs of snow here and there have kept things skiing well, but no really big powder days on the books for some time.

"There's a little bit of fresh snow on, but you can definitely feel the crunchiness underneath," Sue Shih reported from Sunshine Villageon Thursday.

"They've been farming a lot of snow, especially on top of the Goat's Eye," said Shih. The resort received about 15 cm this week and

• Lake Louise: It's been a pretty dry week, but a few centimetres isexpected to fall before Saturday. The forecast is calling for a mix of sun and clouds this weekendwith temperatures hovering around -5 C. Similar story atNorquay
• Nakiska. Lower Mighty Peace closed until Jan. 23 for the World Cup Ski Cross event at the hill this weekend. Since Wednesday, about4 cm of snow has accumulated but it's unlikely they'll be anymore this weekend.
• Kimberley: 9 cm since Wednesday and the resort could get a dusting this weekend. Temperature expected to reach a high of 0 C on Saturday and -2 on Sunday.

Cross-country

When temperatures climb above zero, it's not a good time to groom.

That meanslower elevation trails, like Ribbon Creek and Kananaskis Village, won't get maintaineduntil things cool back down over the weekend.

If you're not on waxed skis, the warm weather makes fortricky conditions so you might want tohit thehigher elevationtrailsthis weekend.

Backcountry

Lately, excellent conditionshave beenpushing skiers into some pretty bold terrain. Butnow is a good time to push back.

This warming trend along with high winds are creating an avalanche cycle heading into the weekend. The heavier,wetter snow that's falling outside the Bow Valley corridor willadd extra pressure on a weak faceted layer that formed earlier in January.

"It's driven danger ratings up," saidPenny Goddard withAvalanche Canada."We do have quite a high level of concern of of continued human triggering of avalanches through the weekend."
