Police investigate dead body found near 7-Eleven

Police are investigating the death of a man found outside a northeast Calgary convenience store.

Police are investigating the death of a man found outside a convenience store innortheast Calgary.

Just after 11:30 p.m. local time Monday, police were called to a 7-Eleven. They found a trail of blood leading away from the business and toward the body of a dead man.

On Tuesday, police questioned witnesses and searched for suspects.

Thedeath marks Calgary's 23rd homicide this year. Last year, Calgaryhad 24 homicides.

"Our numbers are still indicating that it is still a very safe city to live in," said Staff Sgt. Patty McCallum.

But criminologist John Winterdyk believes that could change as more people moveto the city, lured by a prosperous economy.

"There is a lot of work or money to be had, but for those who can't or don't have the skills, it presents other challenges and it is the conflict that we sometime see."

Meanwhile, police have released the name of a man who died of gunshot wounds on Sunday afteran 11 p.m. shootingat 8 Street and 7 Avenue SW.

The death of Preston Kyle Matthews, 38, of Calgary was not a random incident and may be linked to drugs, said police.
