No flood overtime for Calgary's city managers, Nenshi says

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi says he does not support paying overtime to city managers for the extra hours they worked during the flood and its aftermath.

City managers are usually exempt from overtime payments, but some city council members have asked city administration to investigate whether senior personnel are filing overtime claims.

"I think that you do have to compensate people fairly butI think there are other mechanisms to do that rather than paying out strict overtime on the number of hours that are worked," said Nenshi. "I think that part of being a professional is you don't clock in 9 to 5 every day."

The mayor acknowledged many of these employees worked 100 hour weeks for three weeks including people in his executive office who did not receive any extra pay for that time.

The city paid $20 million to its unionized staff for their extra hours during the flood crisis.

Nenshi said that money had to be paid in cashso the city can recover it from the province's disaster recovery program.
