Neighbour Day gives Calgary flood victims chance to reconnect

People across Calgary are trying to build on the community spirit ignited in the days and weeks after last year's flood.

The city has declared today "Neighbour Day". It is a day to celebrate how Calgarians came together to help out during the floods. Communities across the city are holding block parties, barbecues and picnics so volunteers and flood survivors can reconnect.

"People from all walks of life needed help then and for me, that was amazing to see," said Tammy Maloney, president of the Tuxedo Park Community Association. "I've travelled the world, far and wide, looking for a place to bring people together and make a difference and what I've found is here in Calgary, it's the absolute best place to be."

Maloney says the flood unleashed the desire neighbours already had to get to know one another, and showed the world that Calgary is a true community.
