Calgary Fire Department clears more rebar from Bow River

Calgary fire crews returned to the Bow River to remove more rebar but from a different section than where 80 pieces were hauled out a few days earlier after the hazard punctured a number of rafts.

Battalion Chief StuLaird says a report came in shortly after 6:30 p.m. about asection of the river under the Graves Bridgenear Glenmore Trail.

"Crews cut off about two dozen pieces of exposed rebar that were coming from the shore into the water on the down-river side of the Graves Bridge,"said Laird.

Rebaris oftena set of steel bars or wires used to reinforce concrete.

"It wasn't in an area that would be typically navigated by leisure watercraft. It was more in an area where maybe fishermen might be."

No one was hurt or reportedinjuries.

Laird said the danger to public safety was quite low, but crews cleared it because it was a potential hazard.

Over the weekend, a number of rafts got caught up on a large amount of rebar in another section of the rivernear Crowchild Trail.

Fire crews removed it earlier this week.

It's believed the rebar may have been deposited in that location during the 2013 flood thoughfire officials say it's still unclear where that rebar came from.

Rafting down the Bow is a popular summer pastime in the city.
