Michael Andrew Scott out of prison, warn Calgary police

Calgary police are warning the public about a violent sexual offender who hasbeen released from prison and is living in the city.

Michael Andrew Scott, 42, has just finished serving a seven-year sentence for aggravated assault, forcible confinement and break and enter for which he was designated a long-term offender as part of his sentence.

Scott has a criminal history in Calgary that dates back to 1991 andincludes multiple sexual assaults.

He has targeted female strangers in their homes as well as in public, say police, whodescribe Scott's assaults as impulsive.

This isn't the first time police have warned the public about Scott.

In September2008, after serving more than 12 years at the Bowden Institution for three sexual assaults, police warned the public that Scott had a history of attacking women in parkades.

Five weeks later, he was arrested again after breaking into a stranger's home and assaulting her.

Scott is beingmonitored by the Correctional Service of Canada and must obey conditions of a long-term supervision order for the next 10 years.

Police issued the newwarning "after careful deliberation and consideration of all related issues, including privacy concerns," officials said in a release.

Police say it is "clearly in the public interest to inform the members of the community of the release of Scott."

Members of the public are being askedto take suitable precautionary measures and not to engage in any form of vigilante action.

Under Section 32 of Alberta's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, a public body can release information about a risk of significant harm to the environment or to the health or safety of the public.
