Measles warning issued at Western Canada High School

Alberta Health Services is warning of a possible measles exposure at Western Canada High School.

Officials say anyone who was at the school between 8:30 a.m.and 5 p.m. MT on Jan. 10 may have come into contact with a confirmed case of measles.

People who have not had the disease or have not been vaccinated should watch for symptoms.

AHS says symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose or red eyesand a red blotchy rash.

The rash typically begins behind the ears and on the face, spreading down to the body, and finally to the arms and legs. Measles can spread by coughing and sneezing, or through air currents. Because it is an airborne disease, it is extremely contagious.

Symptoms tend to develop within seven to 21 days of exposure.

If youhave been exposed to the measles, Alberta Health warns against visiting a clinic or hospital to help reduce the spread of the disease.People should instead call Health Link at1-866-408-5465 for instructions.
