Arrest made in Forest Lawn homicide, now confirmed as a shooting

Calgary police have arrested and charged a Gleichen man with second-degree murder in connection to the homicide in Forest Lawn last week, now confirmed as a shooting.

Calgary police have arrested and charged a man with second-degree murder in connection to the homicidein Forest Lawn last week.

Police allege a 25-year-oldfromGleichen,Alta.,shot the victim, 34-year-oldJonathan Joe Schmeikal,to death.

Officers first responded to the 2600 block of 43rdStreet S.E. shortly before 6 a.m. onSept. 30, 2015 tocheck on the welfare of a man who was reported injured in the area.

Upon arrival, officers found Schmeikal already deadand an autopsy confirmed he was shot to death.

Police believe the shooting took place in the vicinity of where the victim was found.

This death marked Calgary's 21st homicide of 2015.
