Inmate escapes from Alberta prison

A man considered armed and dangerous has fled from the Bowden Institution, about 100 kilometres north of Calgary.

A man considered armed and dangerous has fled from the Bowden Institution, about 100 kilometres north of Calgary.

Shawn Thomas Evjen was discovered missing at about 9 p.m. MT Monday, touching off a lockdown and search of the area with dogs and a helicopter.

"The RCMP are considering him to be armed and dangerous given his history and at high risk [to] re-offend," RCMP said in a news release.

Evjenis five-foot-sevenwith red hair and blue eyes, and weighs 166 pounds.

Evjen, who's 46,is serving a 24-year sentence for robbery, use of a firearm, assaulting a peace office, disguise with intent, possession of a weapon, and armed robbery. He started his sentence in 1985.

He was released in February and committed another armed robbery in Red Deer and was returned to custody. He has been convicted in that case but not sentenced.

"The Correctional Service of Canada is committed to working with our local law enforcement agencies and will review the circumstances surrounding the escape and take all necessary measures to address safety and security issues stemming from this incident," RCMP said.
