Calgary police evacuated a condo complex in Inglewood on Sunday after reports of a woman with a weapon trying to force her way into several residences escalated into a standoff that lasted for several hours.

Police were called to the SoBow complex at the 100 block of Inglewood Park southeast just before 4 p.m., the Calgary Police Service said in a release early Monday.

The woman got into one of the units and the occupants fled to safety without injury, police said.

"Officers conducted a rapid entry into the building, evacuating occupants while searching for the suspect, who was located and contained in a unit," the release said.

Residents of the building were taken to a safe location while negotiators and the tactical unit were brought to the scene.

The fire department was also called to assist because what was thought to be smoke was seen coming from the building. But it was later determinedthere was no fire and the apparent smoke was the result of a fire extinguisher that had been released, police said.

The suspect was taken into custody at about 1:30 a.m.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and no further information can be released at this point.
