Carjacking story concocted to cover up hit and run, police say

A man called to report that his car had been stolen in northeast Calgary but there were a few things about his story that raised the suspicions of police. And soon he found himself charged in a hit-and-run that happened minutes earlier.

Officers concluded man claiming to be victim was actually responsible for nearby hit and run

A Calgary man is facing charges after he allegedly concocted an elaborate story to cover up a hit and run.

Police were called to the scene of a hit and run last night around 7 p.m. at 38th Street and 32nd Avenue northeast.

About 10 minutes later, police got a call from a man claiming to be a victim of a carjacking at a home on Whitestone Way northeast not far from the scene of the collision.

The man told police a suspect had assaulted him and then stolen his vehicle.

However, officers concluded the car and its owner matched the description provided by several witnesses of the suspect in the hit and run.

They also believe the injuries he had sustained were from his vehicle'sairbag being deployed not from an assault.

There were no other injuries in the hit and run, police say.

Charges are pending against the man, reported to be in his 20s.
