Heat warnings continue for Calgary, much of southern Alberta

The hot temperatures will persist until the end of the week with cooling temperature trends expected by Saturday.

Environment Canada is continuing to issue heat warnings for Calgary and much of southern Alberta with daily high temperatures expected to reach 30 Cfor the rest of the week.

Daytime temperatures in some parts of the province are forecast to range from 29to 34 C. The heat should taper off Monday night and Tuesday before rising again on Wednesday, the agency said on its alerts page.

As of 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, the heat warnings covered these areas:

  • Calgary.
  • Okotoks, High River, Claresholm.
  • Drumheller, Three Hills.
  • Brooks, Strathmore, Vulcan.
  • Medicine Hat, Bow Island, Suffield.
  • Lethbridge, Taber, Milk River.
  • Cypress Hills Provincial Park, Foremost.

Environment Canada is advising people to take precautions to protect themselves from the heat.

"The precautions include doing outdoor activities later in the day, taking frequent breaks, drinking lots of water and never leaving people or pets in a closed vehicle," they said.

These hot temperatures will continue through the week with a cooling trend expected by Saturday.

With two weeks remaining in August, the city is having its warmest month since official records started, according to Calgary Weather Records, a Twitter account that uses government data. The mean temperature so far in August is 20.2 C.

The record was set in July 2007 when the median temperature for the month was 19.84 C.
