Heat warnings issued for Calgary, much of southern Alberta

Environment Canada has issued heat warnings for Calgary and much of southern Alberta with temperatures expected to reach 35 C in some areas on Monday.

Daytime temperatures in Calgary are forecast to range from 29 C to 34 C. The heat should taper off Monday night and Tuesday before rising again on Wednesday, the agency said on its alerts page.

In several areas farther south, including Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, the temperature is predicted torange from 32 to 35 C.

People are advised to take precautions to protect themselves from the heat. The precautions include doing outdoor activities later in the day, taking frequent breaks, drinking lots of waterand never leaving people or pets in a closed vehicle.

"Monitor for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, such as high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, faintingand unconsciousness," Environment Canada said.

As of 10:30 a.m. Monday, the heat warning covered these areas:

• Calgary.
• Okotoks, High River, Claresholm.
• Brooks, Strathmore, Vulcan.
• Medicine Hat, Bow Island, Suffield.
• Lethbridge, Taber, Milk River.
• Cypress Hills Provincial Park, Foremost.
