Some Calgary roads closed after thunderstorm causes flash flooding

A severe thunderstorm led to flash flooding on many Calgary roads on Thursday.

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 5:41 p.m., and it ended just before 7:20 p.m.

The heaviest rainfall was seenin northwest Calgary, where rush hour traffic came to a standstill on several roads,including parts of Stoney Trail, Nose Hill Drive, eastbound John Laurie Boulevard and 14th Street N.W.

Because of the flooding, eastbound traffic on the Trans-Canada highway, near WinSport, was rerouted to Old Banff Coach Road.

On Twitter, Calgary policeadvised motorists to be cautious, and to be ready to find alternate routes if roads were closed.
