Officials are investigating after a man died while police were taking him into custody in southwest Calgary early Monday morning.

Paramedics were first called to the 2400 block of Erlton Road S.W. for reports of a man having a mental health crisis, according to a release.

The man became combative, so police were called in to assist.

"As the man was taken into custody, he experienced a medical crisis," the release said.

Paramedics then took the man to hospital, where he was later declared dead.

Because it's considered an in-custody death, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken over the investigation.

Police said no further information is being released at this time.
