David and Collet Stephan granted bail while court considers appeal

David and Collet Stephan have been granted bail with strict conditions as they appeal convictions for failing to provide the necessaries of life in the 2012 death of their 19-month-old son.

David and Collet Stephan have been granted bail with strict conditions as they appeal convictions for failing to provide the necessaries of life in the 2012 death of their 19-month-old son,Ezekiel.

David, 33, was sentenced to four months in jail and Collet, 36, was given three months house arrest in June. They were alsogiven two yearsprobation and must complete 240 hours of community service.

Conditions of the couple's bailinclude taking theirthree other children to see a physician licensed in Alberta within two weeks, and ensuring the children see a licensed doctor, public health nurse or paramedic if they become sick or injured.

They must also follow the medical advice of the health-care provider.

The Crown is also appealing thesentence, arguing it was too lenient.

Court heard during the trial thatEzekiel at one point became too stiff to be placed in his car seat and instead had to lie on a mattress while his mother drove him from their rural home in southern Alberta to a naturopathic clinic in Lethbridge to pick up an echinacea mixture.
