Driver dies after slamming into light pole on Stoney Trail

A 35-year-old man has died after losing control over his car and veering across several lanes of traffic, then slamming into a light pole on Stoney Trail S.E.

A 35-year-old man has died after losingcontrol of his car on Stoney Trail S.E. and veering across several lanes of traffic, then slamming intoa medianlight pole.

Police said in a release Friday morning that they received reports at about 9:20 p.m. Thursday of a single vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of Stoney Trailnear 114th Avenue S.E.

The man was driving ablack Chevrolet Cobalt northboundon Stoney Trail in the third lane.

Police said he started to exit onto 114th Avenue S.E. when he lost control and spun back onto Stoney Trail, then crossed all three lanes of traffic and slammed into a street light pole in the median.

He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Authorities shut down northbound and southbound traffic on Stoney Trail at 114th Avenue for several hours while police investigated.

As of Friday morning, there was no indication that any other vehicles were involved in the crash, police said.

Speed and alcohol are being investigated as factors in the collision.
