Closure of flood-damaged mountain road hurts hiking company

A hiking tour company in Banff is on the rocks because of the closure of the flood-damaged road to Sunshine Village.

The road was closed at the end of June, the very day Mountain Adventures was supposed to open for the season, said business owner Gordon Stermann.

"We would, if it was a nice day, have two to three hundred people a day coming up on our shuttle bus. But right now, obviously zero," he said.

Stermann said he estimates his company has lost over $100,000.

"It's pretty difficult. It's probably half of our business, so its going to have quite an impact."

Crews are busy hauling away rubble to get the road open. Stermann said he hopes that happens soon, before the entire season is lost.

He said its hard to say if the company will be able to recover through the winter.
