The city needs to do more to help low-income families, a report released this week by the United Way says.

The studylooks at how to improve the well-being of low-income people living in Calgary.

Calgary United Way President Lucy Miller said improving access to supports and guaranteeing basic needs are the keys to helping families get ahead in a prosperous city like Calgary.

"It's not as if there aren't enough opportunities in our city or not enough wealth. There is." Miller said.

"It's just a matter of making sure that everybody accesses it and it's a matter of building the capacity of people so that we maximize their potential."

Research for the report was done in Calgary throughout 2011.
