Calgary has a new fire chief, after city council approved the hiring of Halifax firefighter Bruce Burrell Monday.

Calgary has a new fire chief, after city council approved the hiring of Halifax firefighter Bruce Burrell Monday.

Burrell replaces Wayne Morris, who retired earlier this year.

The city says Burrell, currently a deputy chief director in Halifax, will start Aug. 2.

"I'm really excited about coming to Calgary and joining the Calgary fire department," Burrell said in a statement. "This is an incredible opportunity to contribute to one of Canada's most progressive fire departments."

Mayor Dave Bronconnier says Burrell has a mix of professional skill, leadership experience and community outreach planning that will serve Calgary well.
