Door-to-door scammers offering 'energy audits' for carbon tax, Calgary homeowner warns

A Calgary homeowner is warning others to be aware of a possible door-to-door scam related to the looming carbon tax.

Louis Nagy says two men in their early 20s came to his southwest Calgary house on Wednesday saying they were conducting "energy audits."

They asked to examine his furnace to see if he qualified for a lower carbon tax.

But when Nagy let them in, he noticed the men seemed to be scoping out his home, and spending little time looking at the furnace.

"I'm just concerned. It doesn't happen to me ever that I worry about things of this nature," he said. "But this was strange because a furnace is not something you can check in a couple of minutes to see if it qualifies for a lower tax."

"I just hope it was a one-time visit, that they will not return."

The Alberta government says it is not involved in any type of energy audit in relation to the carbon tax.

The Better Business Bureau received a similar complaint last week. It says homeowners should ask to see city-issued licences or other credentials before inviting people into their homes.
