'People just kept on coming': Record-breaking first day at Calgary Stampede

The Calgary Stampede broke a first-day attendance record this year as 122,403 people streamed through the gates Friday.

'I think this is an indicator of a really great Stampede,' spokesperson says

The Calgary Stampede broke a first-day attendance record this year as 122,403 people streamed through the gates Friday.

"People just kept on coming," spokesperson Jennifer Booth told CBC News.

"I think everybody here is pretty excited about it. We had an amazing parade. A lot of people headed from the parade to the park to take advantage of the promotion we had, free admission until 1:30 p.m."

Last year's opening day, the previous record, saw attendance at 115,235, which is 7,168 shy of this year's.

Booth says there are many factors at play.

"The weather was absolutely beautiful. We have so many great musical acts, we have some great new venues and some new attractions," she said.

"I think this is an indicator of a really great Stampede."
