Calgary's pathways get double yellow lines to improve safety

City workers have started to paint double yellow lines on certain stretches of Calgary's pathways as a way to warn users about upcoming intersections, blind corners and other possible dangers.

Spokesman Duane Sutherland says the idea is borrowed from the familiar double lines on roads and highways.

"I think we all know that you really shouldn't pass on a double line on the highway," he said.

However, Calgary residentEvelyn Louie says even if most know the rules of the roadit's more important to give pathway usersan education in manners.

"I cycle,I walkand I walk with my dog and I find there is a lot of etiquette to be had," she said.

Sutherland agrees and saysthe new double yellow lines are just one way to warn cyclists to be extra cautious, especially since the pathways are becoming more and more congested.

"Our biggest concern is conflicts with other users,so to the best of our ability we are trying to clarify where you should be and on what part of the pathway you should be using," he said.

Sutherland says the city is also using stencils painted onto the pathwayto differentiate between walking and biking areas and to warn users of other potential dangers.
