The 22nd annual Calgary CIBC Run for the Cure raised $1.33 million Sunday in support of breast cancer research.

Roughly 7,781 participants turned out to run or walk a five-kilometre route through Calgary. The race was part of an effort across Canada to raise money for the disease.

"Time and time again, the Calgary community along with the entire Prairies/NWT region amazes us with their dedication to the foundation and breast cancer cause," said Bonnie Megley, vice president of business development for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in the Prairie/NWT region.

"The efforts of the participants, volunteers and corporate and community partners brings us one step closer to our vision of creating a future without breast cancer."

The money raised in Calgary contributed to a regional total of close to $5 million.

It will help fund research, health education and advocacy programs, and help support women and their families who have experienced the disease.

Last year, Canadians raised over $30 million through the event.
