Calgary police sex trade investigation results in 27 people charged

Two notorious sex strolls were targeted by Calgary police in an operation that resulted in 27people facing charges.

The sex trade investigation led by the vice unittargeted two areas; 15th Avenueat Second StreetS.W. and 19th Avenueat 48th StreetS.E.

Police received numerouscomplaints from community members in those areas.

The goal of the four-day operation in late April was to reduce prostitution in the area as well as to connect sex trade workers with resources, according to police.

"Although we know the vast majority of the sex trade has moved behind doors, facilitated through online networks, traditional locations are still being used," Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta said in a release.

"It is critically important that we connect with sex trade workers across the board to provide them support and resources should they choose to leave the sex trade."

Those nabbed in the operation were charged with communicating for the purpose of obtaining sexual services.
