Suspected drunk driver who hit police car arrested

A man police suspect was driving drunk is in custody after hitting the wall of a tire shop in northwest Calgary and then ramming a police cruiser as he tried to get away.

A suspected drunk driver whohit the wall of a tire shop in northwest Calgary and then rammed a police cruiser as he tried to get away is in custody.

Police were called to the 1600 block of 16th Avenue N.W. at about 12:45 a.m.Thursday.

As officers arrived, the driver backed into their vehicle and fled.

The driver left the scene but laterveered off the road and hit a power pole at an intersection near 16th Avenue and Sarcee Trail N.W.

The suspect tried to get away on foot, but he was caught with help from the canine unit and the HAWCS police helicopter.

Charges are pending.
