Calgary police break up street gang

Investigators say they've dismantled a violent gang whose members were allegedly involved in two shootings this year in the city.

Investigators say they've dismantled a violent gang whose members were allegedly involved in two shootings this year in Calgary.

After a 10-month investigation, members of the organized crime unit arrested and charged 18 people with various drug and weapons-related offences.

Police allege 14 of the accused are gang members or associates.

One person has been charged in connection with a March shooting in the northeast community of Taradale. Other charges are pending in relation to a separate shooting this summer in the city's northwest.

"These arrests highlight the hard work and dedication shown by our officers in combatting street-gang activity," said Chief Jack Beaton.

Police said during the investigation, they seized:

  • Six handguns.
  • More than 400 rounds of ammunition.
  • About 400 grams ofcocaine valued at $32,000.
  • About 1,000 grams of marijuana valued at $10,000.
  • More than $50,000 in cash.

Three children were also taken in under Alberta's Drug Endangered Children's Act.
