The Calgary Fire Department says its recently concludeddrive by birthday program was such a hit it's being extended but you have to be turning 100.

In April and May, fire crews did almost 9,000 drive-by visits to help children aged fourto 12, and those 75 and older, have some birthday fun despite the COVID-19 restrictions.

The program ended on May 31, but Chief Steve Dongworth said since it was such a resounding success, the department wanted to keep it going in some form.

"As we move towards our 'new normal,'we are extending the program to celebrate Calgarians who are turning 100 years old," saidDongworth.

"It is important to recognize and value people who are reaching this milestone birthday."

Requests for a drive-by should be made online at least two days before the birthday.

The fire department said it's important to remember that a scheduled drive-by could be cancelled if crews are needed at an emergency.
