Calgary Entertainment: 5 things to do around the city this weekend

Summer is officially over but that doesn't mean the fun has to end. Now that we're into the fall season, HomestretchdirectorTracy Fuller breaks down five things to do in and around the city this weekend.

1. Calgary International Film Festival

CIFF kicked off Wednesday night with a gala screening of the Canadian-Irish movieMaudie. Thursday will feature another Canadian film, Two Lovers and a Bear, starring Tatiana Maslany who just won an Emmy for her amazing work on Orphan Black, and Dane DeHaan, who movie buffs might remember from Lawless, The Place Beyond the Pines, Chronicle andLincoln. The rest of the week will see some 210 films screened, meaning there's something for everyone in that lineup. Visit the CIFF website for more info.

2. Fall festivals

Canmore Community Daycare is hosting their thirdannual Canmore Fall Fair on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Roundhouse and the Lawrence Grassi Middle School grounds. The main attraction is a kid's carnival with midway games, clowns, jugglers and face painters and there will also be old-fashionrf field games like three-legged races and potato sack races, a petting zoo, hay maze and horse rides.

Or you can head back in time to the late 1800s at the Bragg Creek Heritage Festival on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., featuring sheep shearing, old movies, antique displays, cowboy poetry, blacksmiths at work and a daily guided historical tour of the hamlet.

The Harvest and Blues Festival also goes this weekend at Ethel Tucker Park in Okotoks,

Saturday will be free shows from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. then on Sunday the fun moves to the Rotary Performing Arts Centre where John Rutherford will perform at 7:30 p.m.

3. Calgary Home and Design Show

The Calgary Home and Design Show kicked off at 4 p.m. Thursday and runs until Sunday at the BMO Centre, with this weekend's highlights including appearances by Mia Parres and Rob Evans of The Expandables and Todd Talbot of Love it or List it Vancouver.

There's also a Fall Flower Market where you can get a free, 10-minute design consultation from a pro at the Ask A Designer booth.

For those already thinking about Christmas shopping, Etsy: Made in Canada goes from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Genesis Centre in the northeast. For those not in the know, Etsy is a popular online store for crafty, one-of-a-kind new and vintage items. Entry is $8.

4. Alberta Ballet presents Shadowland

Alberta Ballet is launching its 50th anniversary season Thursday with the Canadian premier of Shadowland. From the world-renowned Pilobolus Dance Theatre, the show is described as energetic, acrobatic and unexpected modern dance and tells a magical, coming-of-age story of a teenage girl captured by the shadows living on her bedroom wall and pulled into a dreamlike land or darkness, light and adventure.

When: Thursday to Saturday at the Jubilee Auditorium.

5. Goodwood Atoms

For those looking to scratch theirlive music itch, Vancouver alt-rockers the Goodwood Atomsare playing a show at The Gateway at SAIT on Saturday night. Tickets are $11 at the door.
