Calgary entertainment: 5 things to do this weekend

It's that time again time to put the worries and troubles of your week aside and start planning your weekend. Here are five upcoming highlights from the Homestretch's Tracy Fuller.

1. Fluffy baby penguins

Need we say more? The Calgary Zoo's youngest penguin, Nero, is growing fast but still hasn't lost his downy brown baby feathers (not to be mistaken for fur!).

But act quick, because he won't be this fluffy forever. The five-month-old king penguincould start losing his baby feathers as early asthis spring and they'll likely all be goneby the time he's three.

2.Calamity Town

Based on a series ofclassic American mystery novels starring the fictional characterEllery Queen awriter and amateur detective who helped his father, aNew York City police inspector, solve mysteries.

The dynamic and theatrical show has big scale and scope. Itgets its world premiere at Vertigo Theatre in Calgary.

When: Runs until Feb. 21 at The Playhouse.

3. Die Tote Stadt The Dead City

Calgary Opera presentsthe tale of one man's dark obsession with the woman he loved and lost.

The opera'scomposerErich Wolfgang Korngoldwenton to producethe scores of manyHollywood moviesand won the Oscar for his work on The Adventures of Robin Hood.

British maestro Bramwell Tovey is back with the Calgary Opera Company for this production.

When: Jan. 30, Feb. 3 & 5at the Southern Jubilee Auditorium.

4. Baconfest2016

The urban planning film festival is curated by Rollin Stanley, the general manager of Calgary's Urban Strategy. There are two films screening on Feb. 3 Chavez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story and Kochuu a documentary about modern Japanese architecture and its impact on the Nordic building-tradition.

5. Big Winter Classic

A new music festival which combines craft beer and local music launches this weekend in Calgary. We talk to one of the organizers behind the Big Winter Classic about the festival.
