A former Calgary phys-ed teacher has been sentenced to 30 months in jail andfined $200 after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a teenage student.

Edwin Cay Arias, 46, worked at Bishop McNally High School when he began a two-year relationship in 2007 with a student who was 16.

A court-ordered publication ban protects the victim's identity.

Court was earlier told the two "engaged in numerous sex acts," including intercourse and oral sex.

The police investigation began in January 2017 and Arias was arrested and charged in May.

At the time of Arias's arrest, police said the incidents took place at several Calgary homesas well as at the school.

Police noted that while the age of consent at the time was 14, the sexual relationship was illegal because Arias was in a position of trust over the student.

Arias was also handed a 10-year firearms prohibition.
