A 10-year-old girl is in serious condition after an ATV crash near Carseland, Alta.

STARS air ambulance airlifted the girl out of the rural area southeast of Calgary at around 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Naomi Nania, a spokesperson for EMS, says the girl was taken to the closest building for help, but there are very few details about how it happened.

"I know she was in serious condition and just the fact that STARS was launched that is usually a good indication that this was possibly life threatening," she said.

The girl remains in the Alberta Children's Hospital. It's not known whether or not she was wearing a helmet.
