2 people killed in collision on Trans-Canada west of Calgary

Two people are dead after a collision Wednesday on Highway 1 west of Calgary near Morley at about 11:20 a.m., emergency officials say.

According to RCMP, a cube van was travelling eastbound on Highway 1 west of Morley Road when it veered through the median and into the westbound lanes.

The eastbound van collidedhead-onwith a white car, RCMP said.

At the same time, a westbound semi-trailer was unable to avoid the collisionand rear-ended the white car.

Following that, a westbound cube van hit the westbound semi-trailer, RCMP said.

Two people in the white car were killed, according to RCMP.

In addition, three people were taken by ground ambulances to the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, saidAlberta EMS spokesperson Adam Loria.

RCMP said thethree people taken to hospital were thedriver and passenger of the eastbound cube van, and the driver of the westbound cube van.

Westbound traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway was being rerouted through Morley Road to Highway 1A. The rerouting was expected to last several hours.

RCMP said more information on the deceased will not be provided until next of kin are notified.
