5 hospitalized after fentanyl exposure at Calgary Correctional Centre

Five people have been hospitalized after a fentanyl-related incident Saturday evening at the Calgary Correctional Centre. Police say they are all in stable condition.

Five people have been hospitalizedafter an incident involving fentanyl Saturday evening at the Calgary Correctional Centre.

EMS initially said three staff members and one inmate had been exposed to an unknown substance, but updated that on Sunday morning to say five people were hospitalized. All are in stable condition, non-life-threatening condition.

Two correctional officers, two Alberta Health Services staff and one inmate were exposed tofentanyl, theAlberta Union of Provincial Employees confirmed to CBC on Tuesday.

"It appears that an inmate had an unknown substance in his possession," Calgary police told CBC News on Saturday.

"A guard went to investigate. The guard and another staff member were exposed to this substance. One of the guards went into medical distress ... They are all in stable condition being treated."

Calgary fire and EMS checked other staff and inmates at the scene.

"They are just ensuring that nobody else was exposed, and if they were, determining proper treatment," police said.
