Surrey RCMP officers shoot man reportedly wielding machete; IIO investigating

B.C.'s police watchdog is investigating after Surrey RCMPofficers shot a manwith a machete who hadallegedly been chasing another man on Wednesday morning.

Mounties were called to the 10600 block of135A Street after someone reported the man with the machete around 4:17 a.m. PT. A statement said responding officers found a man who matched the suspect's description and confronted him.

"During the course of the interaction with the individual, police officers fired their service pistols, striking the man," read the statement from Surrey RCMP.

The man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening gunshot wounds. No one else was hurt.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) confirmed Wednesday morning that it is investigating the incident.

The IIO is anindependent civilian agency providing oversight of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
