Surrey resident Evan Archibald killed by jeep at bus stop

A 22-year-old man sitting on a bench was killed when a Jeep crashed into a bus stop in Surrey, B.C. on Wednesday morning.

Family members identified the victim as Evan Archibald of Surrey.

Archibald's mother, Karla Drew, described her son as a "good kid," adding she's devastated by the tragedy. Drew and her daughter, Chantel Archibald, visited the crash scene Wednesday afternoon.

"You don't think you're going to wake up and find your son has died," Drew said."I got the phone call from Royal Columbian (hospital) this morning saying your son passed away five minutes ago,"

Chantel Archibald said her brother was on his way to work Wednesday morning at a nearby pub.

Jeep struck curb

RCMP say a 17-year-old girl driving southbound in the Jeep was attempting to make a left turn onto the Fraser Highway around 9:30 a.m. PT when she drove over the curb and struck the victim. He died later in hospital.

"We're not sure why, but the jeep mounted the curb, then pinned the pedestrian on the bench," said Surrey RCMP Corporal Scotty Schumann.

The driver sustained minor injuries and is cooperating with police.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, but Schumann said rain and the driver's youth may have been a factor.

"A 17-year-old does not have a lot of driving experience," he said.

Drew urged drivers to slow down. "There's too many young kids dying on the road," she said.

Eastbound traffic on Fraser Highway from 156 Street was closed while investigators analyzed the scene.
