25 Stanley Cup riot suspects face 61 charges

The Vancouver Police Department announced Wednesday that 25 people face a total of 61 charges for allegedly taking part in the 2011 Stanley Cup riot.

Crown Counsel approved the charges against the suspected rioters who come from Vancouver, North Vancouver, Burnaby, Maple Ridge, Richmond, Delta, Surrey and Seattle. Insp. Les Yeo, the head of the Integrated Riot Investigation Team said more charges could be approved soon.

"We are very encouraged by the approval of these 61 charges and we will continue to work closely with the special prosecution team as even more charges are expected in the coming days and weeks," Yeo said in a written statement.

"We are now another step closer to holding suspected rioters accountable for their actions on June 15th," he said.

On Oct. 31, the Vancouver Police Department recommended 163 charges against 60 people.

Yeo said each of the Crown's reports onthose 60 cases waswell over 500 pages long.
