Storm threat in Delta, B.C., eases

A predicted storm surge for Monday will have less of an effect on areas in Delta but the threat of flooding continues for the west side of Tsawwassen.

On Saturday, city officials said areas of Delta would be at risk for localized flooding between 4 and 10 a.m. PT Monday.

But Delta chief administrative officer George Harvey now says the winds have shifted, changing the areas of concern.

"The prediction for the Boundary Bay-Beach Grove area has lessened in so far as predictability for any type of flooding," he said.

"Unfortunately there's going to be coinciding high winds which we're experiencing right now, right through midnight but that will coincide with low tides."

Harvey says the municipality is now focusing its concerns on Tsawwassen Beach, parts of Ladner and Westham Island. Waterfront areas of the Tsawwassen First Nation may also be at risk.

Sandbags are available for residents who live near the water.

High tide will occur around 9 a.m. Monday.
