More snow means school closures as cold snap continues

Another dump of snow fell on Metro Vancouver and other parts of the South Coast this morning and it's likely to stick around for the rest of the week.

Some of the heaviest snow fell in the Fraser Valley, Surrey, Nanaimo and the Southern Gulf Islands where many schools have closed for the day.

The heavy snow did not result in the closure of the Alex Fraser or Port Mann bridges, but the Transportation Ministry said closures could be possible later in the day on the Alex Fraser Bridge if ice starts to fall.

Several thousand BC Hydro customers lost power in Duncan, Surrey, White Rock, Sooke and Galiano this morning.

Environment Canada forecasts the snow will end this morning and the region will have clear skies and cold temperatures for the rest of the week.

Across B.C. Arctic outflow and extreme cold warnings are also in place for Howe Sound Whistler, North Coast, Central Coast, Chilcotin, Dease Lake and Kootenay and Yoho Parks.

Transit and travel updates

• Buses are running to SFU's Burnaby campus as of 8:30 a.m.
• Many other TransLink buses are delayed, detoured or rerouted.
• No delays have been reported on SkyTrain or Canada Line.
• Some delays are reported for flights at Vancouver airport.
• Helijet says flights are operating with delays.
• Harbour Air says some flights are delayed or cancelled.

• VIU's Nanaimo campus is closed to day. All other campuses open until further notice.
• Nanaimo-Ladysmith SD #68 schools are closed today.
• Chilliwack SD #33 has closed all public schools.
• Fraser-Cascade SD #78 has closed all schools.
• Gulf Island SD #64 has closed all Saltspring, Pender, Galiano and Saturna schools.
• Coquiltam SD #43 all schools opening at 10 a.m.
• Credo Christian Elementary School in Langley is closed.
• SouthPointe Acadamy in Tsawwassen is closed.
• Sts'ailes Community School near Agassiz is closed.
• St. Thomas Moore Collegiate in Burnaby opening at 10 a.m.
• St. John Berefeuf in Abbotsford is closed.
• St. James & St. Ann's school in Abbotsford are closed.
• Immaculate Conception in Delta is closed.
• Iqra School in Surrey is closed.
• Regent Christian Academy in Surrey is closed.
• White Rock Christian Academy in White Rock is closed.
• Mediated Learning Academy in Coquitlam is closed.
• Fraser Valley Adventist Academy is closed.
• Star of the Sea School in Surrey is closed.
• St Matthews Elementary Schools in Surrey is closed.
• Discover Montessori School's Nanaimo campus is closed.
• William of Orange Christian School in Surrey is closed.
• Surrey Christian School is closed.
• Holy Cross Regional Secondary School in Surrey is closed.
• Langley Montissori School is closed.
