Slain Surrey homeowner laid to rest: Dubbed 'hero'

Colin Hill, a devoted father shot and killed protecting his family July 12 during a break-in, was mourned at his funeral today, and dubbed a hero.

A sombre group of hundreds paid tribute toColin Hill today,the homeowner shot defending his family athis own Cloverdaledoorfrom an armed invader.

"We did lose a hero in Surrey and it's hard to come across these kind of guys," Harman Bedi, a friend of Colin Hill's told CBC.

The distraught loved ones of Colin Hill, wife Becky Zhou, and family gave tribute to the man shot in his own home in Surrey defending his wife and children.

The 42-year-old father of two died July 12 trying to hold the door closed to stop an armed intruder, while yelling at his wife and children to hide.

Surrey NDP MLA Harry Bains lost his own nephew, who was shot two months ago in Surrey.

"The first thing we need to do is acknowledge that this is an epidemic... in the last few months we have (had)over 40 shootings ... we still don't have a comprehensive plan to deal with crime."

Khouri Lamar Green, 22, was charged with second degree murder in the tragic case. His next court date is in September.
