Metro Vancouver's SkyTrain resumed regular service just after 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, but TransLink was warning commuters to expect delays until the backlog cleared out.

Buses that were put into service to move people between affected stations would continue to run until the backlog was fixed, said TransLink.

Chaos ensued on the morning commute Tuesday when a grinder doing maintenance work overnight derailed, closing a section of track between Metrotown and Commercial-Broadway stations shared by the Expo and Millenium lines.

The SkyTrain closure also caused heavy traffic on the roads, as commuters turned to their cars to get to school and work.

When the service opened Tuesday morning the Expo Line was only running from King George to Metrotown, and from Commercial-Broadway to Waterfront.

The Millennium Line was also only running between VCC-Clark and Columbia, TransLink confirmed.
