Shooting in West Abbotsford leaves young driver dead

A man believed to be in his late teens is dead following what police say may have been a drive-by or hit-and-run shooting in West Abbotsford.

A man believed to be in his late teens is dead following what police say may have been a drive-by shooting in West Abbotsford.

AbbotsfordpoliceConst. Ian MacDonald said the department receivedmultiple 911 calls aboutshots fired in the area of Sparrow Drive and Goldfinch Street at around 7:45 p.m. PT Thursday night.

Responding officers found aman with gunshot wounds slumped overin the driver's seat of a dark-coloured SUV. He was already dead by the time police and paramedics arrived.

MacDonald said the dead man appears to be in his late teens, and may befrom Abbotsford.

Officersconducted a search of the area for other victims and for suspects, but found neither.

"Witnesses in and around the areareported that either one ortwo vehiclesrapidly took off from the area at around the time of the shooting," MacDonald said.

"It sounds as though this is shootingthat took place with shots fired from one vehicleinto another, and I think we've seen that a few times here in the Lower Mainland," hesaid.

Witnesses described the two vehicles that sped awayasa newer white Acura TL and a dark-coloured sedan.

The Lower Mainland's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been called in to take over the investigation, MacDonald said.
